Chapter 11: Audiovisual Technologies

A talking book is a great traditional audio media device to use in the classroom. It will provide a different tone of voice instead of the teacher's usual tone, and makes reading more interesting. A talking book could be used while reading textbooks or for in-class reading. It can help elementary-aged students with learning how to read by having them read along with the talking book. An emerging audio media device that is beneficial to the classroom is the internet radio. Teachers can do many things with the internet radio like, incorporating world news into their lessons. Most kids don't realize what goes on outside of the US, so having an international radio will make them a more cultural individual. A great traditional visual teachnology that is still used today is the overhead projector. While teachers are able to do notes and worksheets on them, the students are also able to participate by writing on them as well. It's a great way to communicate by creating your own graphics, text, and color to help students visually learn. Document cameras are an even better emerging visual technology to use in the classroom. As a teacher, I would use the document camera to display essays to be able to have the class edit the other students essays to show others the most common mistakes. It's more convenient than an overhead projector because any type of object can be displayed, instead of just transparencies.
